What comes is better than what came before

After a few days away from home, I returned to a present that arrived in the mail. I was delighted to see the name on the top left corner, Crystal, a friend I've not seen for three years. She had wrapped the gift in brown napkins and a thick layer of tape. It's shape gave away the contents (clearly a CD), but it was the note and the accompanying artwork that made it all special.

When I lived in London, me and Crystal along with my roommate Todd and our friend Brian would walk (or drive) up Richmond Street to a clearing in between residential neighbourhoods. We'd throw a blanket on the grass, lie down and just stare up at the sky. Someone might light a cigarette and we'd have sporadic conversations, but mostly we just watched the stars until the cold got too unbearable.

That is what Crystal had painted. It evoked fond memories of important relationships that although distant, have not been forgotten and certainly not let go. The music she sent — Sigur Ros, Bjork,  Louis Armstrong, Final Fantasy, Cat Power — is the perfect accompaniment. It's all thinking music and for me, a reflection of my personal state of mind back then. I know that all those nights I sat under the stars, I wasn't the only one thinking about unrequited loves, lost directions and unanswered questions. Many things have changed since then, but I would drive a couple hours just to have another night like that.

Aren't Asians Great?

Yes, yes we are.

Every star is crossed by phrenetic thoughts

Lentils and beans

I changed L's mind about beans with my sweet potato chili on Monday night. Although too much was made, it felt good to finally cook again, and for someone other than just me. Chili and Vietnamese pho are my two favourite comfort foods, as different as they are. Chili and a warm piece of bread make the  freezing temperatures milder and look! Toronto is now hovering around zero and our pant bottoms are all puddle and salt-stained. Could this be the end of our winter of discontent?

You're like wine down my throat so I never lose my glow

February has the harshest of reputations and we all sigh a breath of relief as the shortened (though seemingly longest) month comes to a close. Unless you are Chinese and celebrate a new New Year, I can't think of anything to cheer about in February. After all, the groundhog lied, there is no early spring on the horizon.

I want to use Mother Nature's hostility as an excuse for my idling, but really, how many times can I write about the weather? The truth is, I lost focus and forgot about all my New Year's (re)solutions. I never did the fast (more research showed I was  "crazy" for even thinking about it,) I haven't read as much as I'd like nor have I been exercising as much I should be. Sometimes even I doubt the meaning of my own words, even if they're typed out in plain black and white.

But I am really trying now: I've settled into my new job; relived myself of negative baggage; and prioritized sleep, rest and mental health. So far, it's working out and I've made plans to do more things I said I would in 2007. I can't complain really, it's shaping up to be a fairly good year. This week, the positivity continues. I will start a new book, cook a real meal and spend quality time with important people I haven't seen in weeks, possibly months. That said, I'm ready for March...

Some things we do for love, love, love

Couple in front of Central Police Station

If you live in a cave and just found Internet access, you may not realize that Wednesday is Valentine's Day. It's very easy to despise this day regardless of your status. It's a day dedicated to love after all, and that makes it an obvious enemy to anyone who's a little cynical about romance.  But Valentine's Day doesn't have to be about romance. Throughout the years, my favourite Valentine memories have been of friends and family.

During especially rough days at Western, my mother sent me adorable  stuffed  toys — lady love bugs, to be exact for Valentine's Day. And last year, at the height of my homesickness, Maggie and Brian sent me the most awesome care package of my favourite things: music, magazines, art stuffs. I guess the most important thing about the day is knowing that we're loved and showing others that we love them, too. Sometimes it's through presents, a phone call, or a song. Whatever happens, I hope you spend the day with someone you love.

You think you know how crazy I am?

Fruit Stand

I've been neglectful, sorry. But it's with good reasons: a new job, its unconventional hours, bugs on robots, G's 96th birthday and car shopping. Yeah, car shopping. With all the greenhouse gases and evil human activity, it's an especially bad time to get a car. I feel guilty and I really don't want to buy a car, but when you work in the suburbs at 6 or 7 in the morning before the TTC runs, there isn't a real alternative. No SUV for me though, just a little commuter buggy to get me places.

My new job has little to do with writing, but I like it. I hope it means I'll spend more time writing here once the fog of newness clears. It's almost always busy at work and time flies by really quickly. I like busy. I like having long lists of things to do at work, followed by scheduled social activities and exhaustion at the end of the day.
