Through buildings gone missing like teeth

From Victoria Peak

It's official. After a year and three months in Hong Kong, I've decided to return to my home and native land, Canada. My flight departs from the SAR exactly two weeks from today and while I've enjoyed my time here, I'm really looking forward to going home to Toronto. I will be returning at the onset of winter, but I've been assured it will be a mild one. Thanks, global warming!

Despite my criticisms of Hong Kong's air quality, policies and culture, I will miss this place. I will miss the old villages of the New Territories, the Bank of China building, Pret-A-Manger cookies, Joyce Is Not Here, Victoria Park, the MTR, Octopus Cards, the laundry store and my tiny apartment. Of course, there are people who have made the past year a lot of fun and they know they'll be missed, too.

I'll leave you with this song today. One of the best songs from one of the best Canadian bands ever:

mp3: The Weakerthans - "Left and Leaving"

Comments

Damn, sorry to hear you're leaving us. We must meet up for a drink before you leave -- and I wanna copy some of your music...

I hadn't heard of the Weakerthans before -- but that's gotta be the guy from Death Cab For Cutie and Postal Service on vocals, right?

Thanks, Hamish. The Weakerthans have no direct relation to DCFC or PS. They are from Winnipeg, Manitoba and the talented John K. Samson is the singer. My favourite record is "Left and Leaving," one of the best records to ever come out of Canada, but unfortunately most people don't know that.

Sad to hear that you're leaving our fragrant city, I hope you keep up the blog as you've introduced me to several bands i hadn't heard of before. Take care and good luck in Toronto

Thanks Simon. I'll definitely continute to blog.

Are you leaving bc of the air pollution? It's sad how many are leaving anyway...
But best of luck!

Thanks, Edwin. I'm not leaving because of the air pollution, although that certainly doesn't help HK. I'm leaving more or less because I'm bored and I think HK's run out of things to offer me. It's a great place, but it's time to go home.
